Chromebooks

Chromebooks

The Chromebook should have at least 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It should have at least a M3 Processor. We recommend at least a 14" screen to properly see your code.

For comparison McCall's BYOD site recommends the HP Chromebook 11 G6 EE  Celeron 11.6" display which runs about $229-$269. This device is NOT suitable for our programming classes.

Note: The only reason we are recommending Chromebooks is because they are often recommended by the schools due to the long battery life. Because of this we took some time to research possible Chromebooks that would also work with our programming classes.

Students can always opt to continue using their Raspberry Pi (strongly recommended) for any of the programming classes we teach. This also ensures they will always have the correct configurations and software needed for the class.

The second Chromebook offers a touch screen / flip screen. When on sale we have seen it for around $549.99 Regular price around $600.00. Don't be confused by the C434 4GB Ram which costs $460. You want the 8GB version.

Cases

Keeping in mind that children will be using the Chromebooks at school too we also researched and tested some cases. We have found three that fit the Chromebooks above well.

The first one is slim and padded on the inside. It fits nicely in most kids backpacks and has a zipper on the top so kids can easily pull out the laptop with out having to pull out the entire case. It also has a handy strap (not a shoulder strap) when carrying it to and from class. This one has been the most well liked among the children that don't need a shoulder strap. Note that this says 13.5, that is because the Chromebooks above actually managed a 14" screen in a 13.5" body.

The second case is a work-in case. This means that the laptop doesn't have to come out of the case but instead the case opens with the Chromebook and you can start working right away. It does not have additional padding on the sides. Another popular choice among students.

The third is for those who like to have both a hand strap and a shoulder strap as well. The shoulder strap can be removed if you prefer to just use the hand strap. Note this one opens from the side so if they carry it in their backpack they would most likely need to take it out to get the Chromebook out.

The fourth case is for the Chromebook Flip C434TA ONLY. It is a 2-piece light-weight shell that easily snaps on and off. NOTE: Before placing order, please make sure to verify your laptop model number as this case is MODEL specific and not interchangeable.

Other Products we have tested

Wireless Small Style Mouse

Some students prefer a separate mouse over the touchpad (A mouse can be connected to the Raspberry Pi even if your wireless keyboard with touchpad is connected)

Compact Paper/Code Stand

The one below is easy to transport to and from class.

Monitors

If you prefer to use a monitor at home instead of a TV we have listed some options below.

You will need a DVI to HDMI adapter for this monitor if using a Raspberry Pi (This is the type we use in class)
